Our Campaign To Ban Plastic Bags In Bali
Melati and Isabel Wijsen are two amazing young women who wanted to make their home a better place. Their mission was to stop plastic bags from polluting their beautiful island of Bali. Most bags end up in the ocean, where they pollute the water and harm marine life. The rest of the bags are burned in garbage piles and pollute the atmosphere.
They organized the other kids on the island to help them. The girls were determined to get the attention of the adults. They used petitions, beach cleanups, even a hunger strike.
They finally convinced the governor to commit to a plastic bag-free Bali by 2018.
“Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you’re too young or you won’t understand,” Isabel says to other aspiring activists. “We’re not telling you it’s going to be easy. We’re telling you it’s going to be worth it.”
